Celebrating
the Human Spirit Radio Spot
Segment 21: Doing Well by Doing Good through
Jewelry!
Years ago, in an artist's co-op in New England, I
bought a unique
pin with a tiny intricate design of a house with a
tree and a tiny
car. I was told the artist had been homeless for two
years. That she
taught herself jewelry design and sold these pins to
get herself back
on her feet.
Today, Lucinda Yates from Portland, Maine has done
more than get
herself back on her feet. She's created a company and
a line of
affordable, high quality jewelry that benefits social
causes and has
turned over $16.5 million dollars to non profits.
What a story! While selling her pins through
boutiques, Lucinda
kept thinking how to ease the problem of homelessness
- how to give
back to the community. She created a piece in the
form of a house. And
in 1989 the House Pin became the start of a company
with a conscience.
Giving 50% of the income back to a sponsoring
organization, the House
Pin has helped thousands of organizations raise
millions of dollars.
The House Pin has grown into Book pins, little people
pins, women
pins, pet pins.all designed to support the
appropriate fund-raising
efforts.
What a triumph of spirit, ingenuity, and integrity
proving you can
do well by doing good! This is Eileen McDargh for
