Celebrating
the Human Spirit Radio Spot
Segment 23: Hilarious Holidays and Web
Wonder
December is a month of special holidays: Hanukah,
Christmas, Kwanza
and the close of Ramadan. But I discovered a web site
created by
teenagers that lists bizarre American holidays.
Here are just a few December celebrations:
Wear Brown Shoes Day, National Gazpacho Day, National
Roof-Over
Your-Head-Day, National Underdog Day, National Ding-a-
Ling Day and my
favorite, National Chocolate-covered Anything Day.
December 27 is
National Fruitcake Day a time in which I suppose we
all discard that
horrid fruitcake that's been around since the world
was created.
Here's the kicker: this web site is actually
part of ThinkQuest
Inc. a non-profit organization that offers programs
designed to
advance education through the use of technology.
Students and
educators work collaboratively in teams to learn as
they create web
based learning materials and teach others. The
ThinkQuest Internet
Library Challenge contains more than 5,000 unique
educational web
sites that have been created through ThinkQuest
competitions and
programs. One winning site, Dragonex, is a 70/30
split of Chinese
history and the Mandarin language with interactive
components, .wav
files for pronunciation, and crossword puzzles.
Web sites by kids for kids. well, and me too.
Think I'll go learn
some Mandarin. Maybe on December 30, the Festival Of
Enormous Changes
At The Last Minute. This is Eileen McDargh for WRMN
celebrating the
Creative Spirit!
You can hear the segments live at
www.1410.com by going on line and listening at
7:50 am CST every
Friday.
