Celebrating the Human Spirit Radio Spot

Segment 9: Life In Stitches

It is said that God gave us memories so that we might have roses in winter. Sometimes God also might give us quilts. This is if you are a friend of Los Angeles resident and quilt designer, Carol Bloom who decided to capture memories in 6 inch squares for her young friend, Hilla.

Hilla was expecting her first baby when tragically, Hilla's father died. Carol asked Hilla's family and friends to send her clothing or fabrics that would be significant to Hilla. When Hilla opened up the gift at a baby shower, she burst into tears. Small wonder. Here she was, viewing a patchwork comprised of her husband's favorite shirt, her grandmother's sari, a dress Hilla wore as Ms. India, a piece of a t-shirt from her work with the Peace Corp, business clothing that tracked her career path, and a piece of her father's burial cloth. The quilt now hangs on the wall in the baby's nursery.

Call it Emotional Fabric. Call it the quilt connection. But definitely call it a celebration of life, and spirit. What little fabric would you put away that would capture part of your life and spirit?
