Newspapers show us the poverty and pervasive inhuman conditions of children “off shore”. Caught by these pictures, I supported children in these regions through Save the Children, http://www.savethechildren.org/about/ the leading non-profit organization for helping disadvantaged children. With fully 92% of its monies going directly to the programs, Save The Children is an outstanding organization. But I have switched-- not from Save the Children but rather in the AREA of focus. Now my sponsorship goes to Kentucky. Yep—rural Southeast United States of America. Consider these facts about rural US:
Children scoring below grade level on their assessment, all programs: 79%Children that receive free or reduced lunch: 91%Number of children living in poverty: 2.6 millionIncrease of childhood obesity caused by poor diet: more than tripled for children ages 6-11.I think we need some work in our own backyard.
