Triple Bottom Line Leadership

When was the last time you were blown away at a national sales meeting? I don't mean by the glitz and glamour, the rah rah and the high fives. Nope--not even the roster of speakers--even though I was one. I mean stunned by the company itself. That's the way I felt this past week at Doral Resort in Miami when I observed an amazing organization: Novo Nordisk and its BioPharm division. Imagine looking around the meeting room, dining hall and even the bathrooms to see countless reminders that the mission of the BioPharm group is to "improve patients' lives". Most mission statements are yucky mantras about superior quality and improving shareholder returns. Pretend you're sitting with me as you listen to senior executives talk about the triple bottom line and hear the employees cheering in support. Here's why: A triple bottom line is the smartest, most future-focused move that few companies commit to: economic viability, social responsibility, and environmentally integrity. Novo Nordisk doesn't just give solid returns to the shareholders. They constantly look for ways to give back to the profession and to the communities in which they work. I watched them--at this meeting--build bicycles for a foster care organization and also present the organization with a check for $10,000. One employee reminded me that I'll also never read about this generosity in the newspaper. It's not done for press. It's done because it's the right thing to do. They take very seriously their impact on the environment. Soon they'll move into a new LEED-certified corporate headquarters and the parent company in Denmark is using wind power to run its manufacturing plant. Recycling is standard--even at this offsite conference and new company cars are hybrids. Wow. Wow and more wow. This is what I call TRUE leadership. WHat do you think? P.S.
