Baratunde Thurston, a columnist for FAST COMPANY, took dead aim at our ever-connected world by proclaiming a 25-day digital detox. He’s a comedian, a best-selling author (How to Be Black), and has over 800,000 followers in Goggle+ . For Thurston to unplug is the equivalent of the sun going dark! As he writes, “I love my devices and digital services. I love being connected to the global hive mind… but I am more aware of the price we pay: lack of depth, reduced accuracy, lower quality, impatience, selfishness, and mental exhaustion, to name a few. In choosing to digitally enhance our lives, we risk not living them.” Wow: read that last sentence again: “In choosing to digitally enhance our lives, we risk not living them.” Just spent the July 4th weekend trying to live life! Event: The wedding of a dear friend in Minneapolis—cell phone charger forgotten at home and my computer sitting in my Dana Point office. Probably not the same as a complete 25-day detox but… It was both terrifying as well as liberating. For this summer, I intend to do more detoxing. What about you?
