Are We Leaders or Laggards in Work/Life Balance Initiatives?

The Washington Post* reported a startling statistic: Of the 168 nations surveyed for a national guarantee on paid maternity leave for working mothers, four nations had no such policy: Papua New Guinea, Swaziland, Lesotho, and the United States. While we are loath to put legal requirements on our companies, I found myself appalled by this ranking. If other industrialized nations can mandate such a policy and remain competitive, why can't we? Something to think about.
