Hug a Nurse this week—and buy a GREAT book!

Today, May 6 is National Nurses Day, also known as National RN Recognition Day. It is always celebrated on May 6th and opens National Nurses Week.  National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, the birth date of Florence Nightingale.

The week-long celebration is designed to accommodate the variety of schedules nurses are required to work!  Whether practicing in a doctor’s office, standing bedside in a hospital, working the ER or the OR, or caring for those in skilled nursing and assisted living  facilities, I am incredibly grateful to the MANY nurses who have been involved with every member of my family.

I did know what Wikipedia reports:  "Florence was a celebrated English social reformer and statistician, and the founder of modern nursing. She came to prominence while serving as a nurse during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers. She was known as "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night."  But what I did NOT know is how this amazing, courageous Victorian woman STILL continues to have influence on the delivery of health care.

My Resiliency Group colleague, Joe Tye, has written a book "The Florence Prescription: From Accountability to Ownership" that should be required reading for both its substance and its motivational aspects. He bring Florence to life in a modern hospital setting where she interacts with hospital staff.  Thru her eyes, you see how we can continue to improve our medical services, not through paperwork and bureaucracy, but thru true caring and individual commitment.

Thank you Faith, Nancy, Michael, Terri, Patty, Elaine, Karyn, Kathy and oh so many more... You are lights in the world. PS:  If you get the book, don’t forget dark chocolate. What the heck. Even great things go better with good chocolate!
