EILEEN MCDARGH'S

Resiliency Report

Published monthly and when the mood strikes.

Update from Eileen

You can fill in the blanks: merriment, family, over-stuffed tables and tummies, singing, drinking, and sadly, missing members who once gathered with us for the holiday.

I purposely chose that word “Holiday”. While many of us say “Merry Christmas”, there is more that occurs in this season besides what we Christian’s call “Christmas”.

From November 1 to January 15 there are approximately 29 holy days observed by seven of the world’s major religion. In fact, “holiday” is derived” from “holy day”.

Whatever you name this season, we wish you a time of compassion, tenderness, joy, love and laughter. Give freely of your time, talents, and treasures.

Lastly, take time to be quiet. Breathe. Give thanks. I am thankful to you and for you!

Do You Have Horse Sense?

Spent two wonderful days with my dear friends, Eunice Carew and Jane Ripley, on their “ranch” in Bear Valley Springs CA. It’s in the center part of California and a true horse paradise.

I shoveled horse poop donated by their four Iceland ponies. I went with Eunice in a strange, motorized vehicle to the manure mountain where community members deposit these offerings that are then picked up and carted off somewhere. I watched children being given rides in carts drawn by ponies. And we marveled at the deer and the elk with HUGE racks.

In short, I said “no” to work and emails, conference calls and writing. I just showed up and relished every minute. That’s what horse sense really is: the ability to say “Neigh” or “Whoa”.

We can become so caught up in doing and achieving that we forget to stop and just BE. Why not give yourself the gift of horse sense as we close out this very strange year. 2022 will come soon enough.

‘Tis the Season for…

When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel H. Pink

I read Daniel Pink’s book, WHEN: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing in 2018 and I often refer back to it. I was surprised when I read the book that the revelation of “when” is directly correlated to your energy! In fact, who knew that there are more unsuccessful surgeries, judicial renderings, and financial decisions done in the afternoon. It has everything to do with energy!

Resilient Relationships - The Toll of Seasonal Stress

I bought a Santa hat yesterday. It was the only one I could find. Embroidered across the white fur base were the words, "Humbug!" It made me realize that we can make the end of this year either a humbug or a HUGbug.

Holiday Memories Aren’t Wonderful if You Have None!

My little sister and I still talk about the time in our grandparents’ house when we were convinced we heard reindeer on the roof. Surely it must have been Santa to deliver the overstuffed teddy bear and the doll with pink hair.

But imagine if you had no memory; if the face of your beloved wasn’t even a cloudy shadow in your brain. Even more painful would be the pain of your loved ones who tried to find YOU inside a body that worked but a mind that didn’t.
