Update from Eileen
For the first time in a long time, July and August have become months of quasi-rest and connections. My sister and I flew to Provincetown to spend a week with our brother. We had tried a “sibling” only vacation in 2022 but both John and Susan got COVID and the time together was cut short.
August brought me to the annual National Speakers Association in Denver. I have been a member for 40 years and so it was bittersweet to say hello to my colleagues and to mourn the ones we lost. The end of August, Bill and I will journey to Washington DC for the Veteran Speakers Retreat. Years ago, that organization recognized me as a “Legend of the Speaking Industry”. Such an honor and one that also makes me laugh. I suspect a legend is another way of saying “moldy oldy”.
Here’s my question and challenge to you, dear readers: How are you connecting with precious family and friends this summer? Perhaps there might be bridges to build and memories to mend. Life is short—too short—for divisions and regrets.
How will you make the most of summer?
Busy August

Some Serious Thoughts to Consider
“Our problem today is that we worship our work, work at our play, and play at our worship."
Gordon Dahl
and
“What hunger is to food- zest is to life.”
Bill Moyers
Where will you get ZEST in your life? There’s a direct correlation between employees who say their work is meaningful and companies considered great places to work.
Soulbbatical: A Corporate Rebel’s Guide to Finding Your Best Life by Shelley Paxton.
I heard Shelley speak when I attended a retreat this summer. Shelley walked away as the highest-ranked senior woman at Harley Davidson, ending her 26-year career. This book is her very honest personal journey to reconnect with her deepest desire… her soul! She’s funny, tough, profane, and powerful. Her work has been featured in Forbes, INC., Thrive Global, NBC, CBS, and on the TEDx stage. I’d love to know what you think.
FUNNIES… you can’t make this stuff up!
My friend called his car insurance company to tell them to change his address from Texas to Vermont. The woman who took the call asked where Vermont was. As he tried to explain, she interrupted and said, "Look, I'm not stupid or anything, but what state is it in?"
I was in a car dealership a while ago when a large motor home was towed into the garage. The front of the vehicle was in dire need of repair and the whole thing generally looked like an extra in "Twister." I asked the manager what had happened. He told me that the driver had set the cruise control, then went in back to make a sandwich.
It was all so different before everything changed.
Some days you're the dog, some days you're the hydrant.
Old programmers never die. They just terminate and stay resident.
Because You Need To Smile
Watch this video of a two-legged dog, his courage AND the compassion and courage of both “Nubby” and his owners.
Can the Clutter
While vacation time should signal a slowdown in our lives, the opposite seems to be true. I’ve talked to many colleagues who feel battered by increasing demands from work and home. They complain of getting little sleep, of being irritable, and feeling overwhelmed.
