Update from Eileen

"Madness!” That seems like the operative word as I write this ezine on March 1. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine leaves me angry, gravely concerned, and frankly, speechless. (And it takes much to make ME speechless!)

I’m acutely aware of those who praise Putin and those who speak truth to power. I am deeply touched by the willingness of the Ukrainian people to fight for their country and the leadership presence demonstrated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

I believe Harvard best-selling author Adam Grant put the best words around Zelenskyy:

“Charisma attracts attention. Courage earns admiration. But commitment to a group is what inspires loyalty. We follow the leaders who fight for us—and we make sacrifices for the leaders who serve us.”

Yes—serve us, not a bank account or special interests but a nation.

Thus, in this issue, my intent is to offer thoughts that can serve; thoughts that can prompt positive action and instill hope; thoughts that prompt reflection and optimism.

“In March winter is holding back and spring is pulling forward. Something holds and something pulls inside of us too.”― Jean Hersey

From an 8th grader: Define irrigation. Answer “When people move place to place.”

From a smart-aleck teen: “If God had wanted me to touch my toes, he would have put them on my knees.”

From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life by Arthur Brooks.

Judging from the many conversations I am having with colleagues and clients, many of us are in a place where we realize that it is time to reset and rethink this next part of our life. Brooks offers a lovely and deep way of recasting this period as one of offering wisdom to others. It’s a time of winnowing versus winning. I’ll be focusing my consulting and coaching efforts in this direction. Perhaps I can be of service to you!

The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain by Annie Murphy Paul

I am still reading this book because it is so rich, provocative, and important. Thinking doesn’t just occur in the brain as we have believed. Rather—our BODY has much to offer us to increase decision making, creativity, and memory retention.  The new word is “interoception”—an awareness of the inner state of the body which is literally sending messages to the brain.

Invisible Architecture™ is the Key to Leadership

Think of all the money spent on designing office buildings, moving cubicles around, consolidating locations. Capital expenditures take a big budget chunk. But what if you literally had the cart before the horse. What if you’re moving people, materials, and merchandise but have forgotten to move what really matters: the human spirit—invisible to the human eye but deeply experienced in relationships, customer outcomes, and performance.
