Update from Eileen

The Broadway musical, CAMELOT, featured Julie Andrews singing about the “Lusty Month of May”. Not to be outdone, the musical CAROUSEL proclaimed that “June is Bustin’ Out all Over.

You get the picture. These two months are a celebration to open air and open arms.  A perfect time for a vacation.

Ahhhhh...vacation. In the late 14th century Old French, vacation meant "freedom from obligation or occupation". By the early 15th century, the English definition was "the process of vacating".

To me, it means "to become empty". What fills that emptiness for me is the ability to explore in the natural world. We're headed out the end of May to venture up the Alaska coast and into the American Cordillera, a massive wilderness park dominated by Denali. This national park is six million acres of wild land, bisected by one ribbon of road. Imagine how glorious the night sky will be without the ambient light of Southern California! Ahhhhh. Stars.

So, I have made a decision. You will not see another ezine until July or August. I'll take notes of insights and outlooks, poems, prayers and promises. (Thank you, John Denver.)

Be well. Be safe. Let me know how you have nurtured your nature. Write Bonnie@eileenmcdargh.com and use the subject line Nurture my Nature. She’ll save it all until I return.

Blessings,

Eileen

Frederick Law Olmsted's legacy went beyond Central Park

Frederick Law Olmsted's legacy went beyond Central Park

Why it matters: If you've ever enjoyed a visit to New York's Central Park, Boston's Emerald Necklace or Washington's U.S. Capitol grounds, you can thank landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who was born 200 years ago and was the mastermind behind all of those green spaces. Olmsted also created innovations such as citywide park systems, advocated for parks and preservation, and developed hundreds of lesser-known parks that are highlighted in a new digital guide. Maybe some of these can be stops on your summer vacation itinerary this year.

Must Read Book!

I participated for eight weeks in a modern elder academy (MEA) online. Powerful. Thought provoking. Much still to be digested.

Life is in the Transitions—Mastering Change at Any Age by Bruce Feiler

I read this book astonished at the depth and breadth Feiler covered in the stories of people of many ages and the implications and lessons he drew from each person. Whether facing a pandemic upheaval or experiencing major loss, whether struggling as a child to move out of abandonment or moving to a new country, life is a series of changes. All of us have “lifequake” moments and how we tell our story helps us recover from those quakes.

Best Books on Burnout & Recovery for 2022

Burnout to Breakthrough: Building Resilience to Refuel, Recharge, and Reclaim What Matters made it to the list. The books are all reviewed by a licensed mental health professional, the article written by that same mental health professional, then reviewed by a medical doctor prior to publication.  This is thrilling news because the content is so vetted. YAHOOOO.
