EILEEN MCDARGH'S

Resiliency Report

Published monthly and when the mood strikes.

Update from Eileen

I admit: I am a sucker for trees in multiple hues, for salmon jumping up waterfalls, for crisp nights; for even crisper apples, and for the first snowfall that turns Crater Lake into an even-more-wonderful gift from a 7,000-year-old explosion.

Wherever you are, I invite you to look around and mentally (and maybe digitally) capture the glories of this season. We’re so inundated with negative stuff. It’s easy to become depressed and feeling hopeless. Take a pause. Winter will come soon enough. Send me your discoveries. Here are a few of mine from road trip up the west coast from California to Washington. Nothing like early morning on a porch staring at Mt. Hood with a cat in my lap.

Strengthen Business Conversations with Spot on Advice

An organization can’t remain resilient if conversations run amuck. Here’s some wisdom from my colleague, Achim Nowak.

To Tickle Your Funny Bone

To Tickle Your Funny Bone

Maybe there is no actual place called hell. Maybe hell is just having to listen to our grandparents breathe through their noses when they're eating sandwiches. – Jim Carrey

Why is it that when we talk to God we're said to be praying, but when God talks to us, we're schizophrenic? – Lily Tomlin

A day without sunshine is like a day in Seattle.

A sign on an auto dealership: “Under New Management. Better Attitude.” I saw this on Interstate 5 in Mission Viejo, CA. How BAD must the old management have been to proclaim a new attitude. That’s a first!!

And since we are in baseball season: "The doctors X-rayed my head and found nothing." – Dizzy Dean explaining how he felt after being hit on the head by a ball in the 1934 World Series

The Genius of Opposites- How Introverts and Extroverts Achieve Extraordinary Results Together by Jennifer Kahnweiler, PhD

In a virtual world or a hybrid one, the tensions of opposites can impact relationships. Unless, of course, you find the wisdom of finding commonalities rather than differences. My colleague, Jennifer is a fellow Berrett Koehler author. She has created a practical five-step process to optimize and appreciate “the other”. Easy to read and VERY doable.

Think Again

Think Again by Adam Grant  is a perfect complement to The Genius of Opposites. Right now, in our polarized universe, there is a critical need to learn to question our opinions and listen to possibilities that we might very well be wrong! As the youngest tenured professor at Wharton, Grant continues to amaze me with the clarity of his thinking and writing. The first book is an easy read. This one takes time as we seek to open our minds to “the other”.
