Update from Eileen
The answer: EVERYTHING! Hit the month of February and hearts and flowers dominate the stores. Romance is in the air. Card racks display love greetings and jewelry ads promote diamonds.
May I suggest that now—more than ever—we need the broadest definition of love. This week, 19 historically black colleges and universities received bomb threats. Two days ago, a hate-filled zoom bomb took over a meeting of Asian American and Pacific Islanders. Name-calling has become a standard rhetoric.
It’s time to STOP! In my tradition, we were taught that “love thy neighbor” was the 2nd greatest commandment after “love thy God”. The “neighbor” was then described as someone who was outside the mainstream and regarded as inferior. Ummmm. Makes me sit up and think deeply.
What are the times I have lashed out in anger and name-called someone? When was the last time I reached out to colleagues who represent diversity and inclusion and sought their advice on how to be an ally? I’m starting today. Just called my colleague Lenora Billings Harris. What might you do? I’d love to know. YES—LOVE to know.
From The Mouths of Babes
What is the proper age to get married?
"Eighty-four! Because at that age, you don't have to work anymore, and you can spend all your time loving each other in your bedroom." (Judy, 8)
"Once I'm done with kindergarten, I'm going to find me a wife! (Tom, 5)
What do most people do on a date?
"On the first date, they just tell each other lies, and that usually gets them interested enough to go for the second date." (Mike, 10)
What’s love got to do with it?

And When We Do NOT Feel Love - From One of My Soul Sisters
A dear friend, Marilyn Semonick, frequently studies at a Buddhist Boot Camp that teaches practical use of ancient thought and shared this with me:
"Confronting people who upset us instead of confronting our anger is like blaming rain for soaking us instead of using an umbrella."
If other people easily upset us, the problem isn’t the other, it’s our short fuse. Ouch . . . work left to do?!
Must Read Book!
Given the state of today’s workplace, leaders need as many tools and resources as possible. That’s why I wanted to tell you about a new book that will be released next month Promotions Are SO Yesterday: Redefine Career Development. Help Employees Thrive. It’s written by my friend, Julie Winkle Giulioni, a fellow Berrett Koehler author.
It looks beyond, between, and besides the climb up the corporate ladder to reveal the many other ways that employees want to grow within an organization. Understand these new paths for growth and you can crack the code on engagement, satisfaction, and retention. She offers a multidimensional framework that features seven alternatives to promotions—contribution, competence, connection, confidence, challenge, contentment, and choice
Children Love the Earth. Let Them Guide Us!
A dear friend sent me this article about how children’s stories about the world can offer powerful alternatives to help fight climate change. Watch a child run in nature, fondle an animal, or look for cloud images and you realize they are deeply attached to this planet.
In their simplicity and curiosity rests a potential positive future. Enjoy.

Baby Wild Boar Thinks Labrador Retriever Is Her Dad
As soon as baby wild boar Yezhu saw Biu Biu the dog she flung herself right into his mouth and kept doing it. Thankfully, Biu Biu is a patient and gentle dog. Dora says the tiny boar piglet had been found by her gardener, who brought the orphaned animal to her.
