Update from Eileen!

April Showers Bring Mayflowers

What Do Mayflowers Bring????

It’s an old joke that kids in the U.S. used to find funny. This year, April seems more magical than manic, more mysterious than mundane. Amid the hatred that billows from opposing political parties, the outrageous attacks on Ukraine, and millions of people displaced from homes across the globe, I find myself looking for signs of hope and optimism.

I am finding it in my mama dove who continues to sit on a nest in the staghorn fern. As my 7-year-old neighbor proclaimed when she saw the nest, “It’s a mansion”.  It certainly is a lovely, protected bower. But after three weeks and no movement, I’m afraid little mama is sitting on unfertilized eggs. No matter. It’s magical that she keeps the faith.

Then there’s the mama hummingbird who has carefully crafted an amazing nest from downy feathers, spider webs and moss. It’s mysterious how she does it, keeping the faith over two eggs the size of peas.

Sounds like small things but, to my mind, these birds give me hope and make me smile. As they follow what nature has pre-ordained for their life, I want to play closer attention to how I can support all of life. I want to help individuals and organizations who take the preservation of this planet to heart. My little hummingbird and mama dove are too precious to lose.

March Madness Also Had Miracles: St. Peter’s

I love underdogs:

“The biggest surprise of this year’s NCAA competition was Saint Peter’s University, a tiny Jesuit school in Jersey City, N.J. In a true David vs. Goliath story, the 15-seeded school stunned the tournament with a victory in the first round over second-seeded Kentucky…”

And what I REALLY love about St. Peter’s is its commitment to students whom the rest of the universe might also consider “underdogs”. Read this:

“What makes Saint Peter’s unique, even among Jesuit schools, is its dedication to working with those on the margins. Although every Jesuit university has a commitment to social justice, Saint Peter’s stands out for living out this commitment in real time, primarily serving first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds

Bold Action for Climate

From Jessica Craven.  "I recently discovered the Climate Action Now app and I LOVE it. It gives you easy ways to help—and so far every action they’ve given me has been something I would absolutely put in this newsletter.

You can set the app to remind you every day to do an action—it never takes more than a minute or so.

IMPREGNABLE: A woman whose memory of labor is still vivid.

INDEPENDENT: How we want our children to be as long as they do everything we say.

PUDDLE: A small body of water that draws other small bodies wearing dry shoes into it.

One More Must Read Book

Love Your Enemies: How Decent People Can Save America From the Culture of Contempt by Arthur C. Brooks

Consider this a handbook for a new generation of citizens who are determined to discover how to use seemingly “soft skills” to bridge the chasms that seem to pull us apart. Brooks is a New York Times bestselling author who has 11 books to his credit and is on the faculty of the Harvard Business School.

After So Much Loss, Time to Lead Again

Certainly, the last three years have been marked by tremendous loss. First, for many of us, we lost parents, siblings, children, and dear friends.  We might have watched our businesses plummet, our communities locked down, our gatherings minimized, and possibly even our faith diminished. What we once took for granted might now be a rarity.

How does one lead when faced with a Rubik’s cube of such complexity?

Remember to Cultivate Resiliency BEFORE You Need It!

Whether you are heading a Fortune 100 company or leading an enterprise of one, some time in the course of this year, you will be called upon to be resilient.

Whether pushed by pain or pulled by possibilities, resiliency is now a required on-going life skill. This raises the question: why wait to develop resiliency skills?

Consider these taking three simple actions now to help you develop a resiliency muscle:
