Resiliency Report

Update from Eileen

Sometimes I do NOT want to learn something new, like AI. I posted a very moving video on my Facebook page. The small video showed the open casket of a policeman and his German Shepherd dog climbing on top of the body to lick his dead master’s face. I cried.

Unfortunately, one of my friends pointed out that it wasn’t a factual video. The coffin would not close. The uniform and face were different in the two pictures. In short, it was an AI-crafted video.

It was actually frightening to realize that. Here’s why: Truth is hard to find if disinformation can be crafted with deepfakes, botnets, and synthetic media. It’s the realm of autocrats who can generate articles under fake bylines, deepfake videos saying inflammatory things, and more.

We’re getting exhausted.

What to do? Establish human credibility anchors: local reporters, educators, and civic leaders whom we still trust. As the authors of Lincoln Square insist, prioritize human support over volumes of “data” that overwhelm and exhaust. I’m going to practice that “learning” the rest of this year.

My colleague, Lenora Billings-Harris, has written a marvelous piece about the difference between kindness and niceness. The former is marked by authenticity and boundary-setting. The latter can be manipulative and hurtful.

Read her article in the link below.

Standing Tall: The Courage of Kindness in a World Obsessed with Niceness

Are you saying yes to too many things because you don’t want to disappoint others—even when you’re already exhausted? Do you smile politely while biting back your truth, laugh at jokes that sting, or remain silent when a boundary has been crossed—all in the name of being “nice”?

Truth is hard to find!

An Oldie But a Goodie

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Fotis Georgiadis on behalf of Authority Magazine. We discussed five things you can do to become more resilient. Resilience is NOT about bouncing back. There is no such thing as going “back” for humans. Whatever has happened in our life is “done.” You can’t enter the same river twice. The river (and life) have moved on. Resilience is the ability to grow THROUGH challenge and the opportunity to become smarter, wiser, and/or stronger. At the end of the day, resilience is energy management.

Why does Sea World have a seafood restaurant? I'm halfway through my fish burger and I realize “Oh my God.... I could be eating a slow learner.”

Why is it that when we talk to God we're said to be praying, but when God talks to us we're schizophrenic?

JOYSPAN:  The Art and Science of Thriving in Life’s Second Half by Dr. Kerry Burnight.

I met Kerry when I was canvassing my neighborhood and was immediately captivated by her vitality and her tenacity. She’s the first person to graduate from the University of Irvine with a PhD in Gerontology. I bought this book as soon as it came out and was taken by the commonsense approach. It’s practical and relevant. We’ve heard of life span and health span. But what good is living longer or healthier without JOY? Let me know your thoughts after you read it. I’m thinking that a joy span conversation would make a great podcast!
