Update from Eileen!

Moms Matter No Matter What the Month

This month, at an airbase in Sweetwater Texas, the children, grandchildren, spouses, and friends of the WASP—Women Airforce Service Pilots WWII—converged to pay tribute to these courageous and daring pilots who collectively flew 60 million air miles of domestic wartime duty.

Although I was not able to attend, I am struck by the story of Katie Marsh. Her grandmother was Marie Barrett Marsh, from the WASP class of 43-47. Katie is a pilot for American Airlines and decided to fly into Sweetwater. Pictured below, you’ll see Katie (pilot) in an AT-6 (top-right) flying into the WASP homecoming. The AT-6 was the advanced trainer plane that all WASP flew during their training. Katie portrayed her grand-mother, Marie Barrett Marsh (top-left).

I know my Mom (pictured above and bottom-left below) must be smiling down on Katie and all who celebrate these amazing women.

Too Young to Die

Three days ago, I got word that Dr. Jeff Salz, my cultural anthropologist friend and adventure traveler died from COVID 19 in Ecuador. It shook me to my core. This last week, a number of us who fell into Jeff's tribe through his seductive wit and inspirational spirit will gather remotely to share memories, stories, and our mutual grief as we celebrate his life.

Get Jeff’s book from Amazon: The Way of Adventure.

MANAGE Your Energy and Not Your Time

The science of stamina has advanced to the point where individuals, teams, and whole organizations can, with some straightforward interventions, significantly increase their capacity to get things done.

Some Things to Make us Smile—and Maybe Laugh

GRANDPARENTS: The people who think your children are wonderful even though they're sure you're not raising them right.

HEARSAY: What toddlers do when anyone mutters a dirty word.

IMPREGNABLE: A woman whose memory of labor is still vivid.

INDEPENDENT: How we want our children to be as long as they do everything we say.

OW: The first word spoken by children with older siblings.

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents

CASTE by Isabel Wilkerson  She’s a Pulitzer prize winning author and an incredibly talented researcher. If you REALLY want to understand how we came to to this place of division, PLEASE read her book. There is so much I learned here. I grew up in the Deep South. I had no idea how sheltered I was. I had no idea that the Nazis used our country as a model for the horrific treatment of the Jews. If you care about FACTS and not fiction.

Bosses and Burnout: Three Things Leaders Should Know

Burnout on the job is costing us millions of dollars annually, but the solutions leaders are putting into place to solve the problem are missing the point.  Here’s what you need to know about burnout, and three effective strategies we as leaders can take to deal with it when it arises, and even prevent it from appearing in the first place.

How Covid Can Change Your Personality

I don’t know about you, but I’ve found the latest stage of the pandemic hard in its own distinct way. The cumulative effect of a year of repetition, isolation and stress has induced a lassitude — a settling into the familiar, with feelings of vulnerability. The shock of a year ago has been replaced by a sluggish just-getting-to-the-end.

Look for the Funny - A Resiliency Clue

A wise person once said, “If you don’t have a sense of humor—you have no sense!” Judging from the dour faces in Congress, I think the pundit is right. But we don’t have to mirror the snarls and growls that haunt Washington, D.C. That’s probably why so many people have been drawn to the parodies found on late night talk shows.

Start looking for anything that nudges your funny bone, takes you by humorous surprise, or gets you caught up in some comedic internal conversation—like the mystery of the spice drawer.
