School DAZE

Update from Eileen
It’s that time again. Traffic picked up as I neared the school. Kids are riding crazy on bikes. The playground behind my house is quiet except for certain hours of the day. Monarchs Butterflies are flitting, and my flowers are asking me to give them one more chance.
I love the autumn months. They remind me to slow down, hunker down, and get ready to shed what no longer serves me. I just took two huge bags of professional dresses to Laura’s House. Laura's House provides domestic violence shelter, support, & resources for women, men & children, helping survivors find safety & rebuild. Its resale store is one way I support this amazing organization.
It’s also the time to hunker down and learn. Below is what I learned from a colleague, John Sileo, at my professional conference. I am also learning about election protection as we approach the midterms. I'll also be learning from my fellow Berrett-Koehler authors at our retreat in early October.

Must Read Book
THEO OF GOLDEN by Adam Levi.
Don’t know what possessed me to pick up this book. Sure, it’s a NY TIMES best seller, but that means little to me. Still, I am grateful for whatever spirit moved me—it is exactly what I needed: a book about kindness, recognizing the gifts in other people, and celebrating the ordinary.
Theo is an elderly man who just happens to come to Golden, GA. He becomes intrigued by charcoal portraits on the walls of a coffee shop. He begins buying these portraits and returning them to their subjects while weaving stories about their lives.
It struck me that my simple act of learning people’s names and petting their dogs on my early morning run earns me a smile in return. We are so horribly divided right now that the gift of attention and smiles might begin to break through the tensions.
Another Recommended Book: The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown
